Backstage Education Resources

Education in the entertainment industry is not limited to higher education college or academia.  There are a slew of resources out there on the internet and through your local production dealers if you know what you’re looking for.

Be specific.  Don’t just look for “console training”, instead use “ETC Express console operation”.  Same is true when you’re asking dealers or manufacturers.  Know what you’re looking for so they can provide you with the best information.

So here are a few places you can go to get that information.

Manufacturer websites – Example: ETC – Electronic Theatre Controls is a manufacturer of lighting, dimming and control products.  They have an extremely extensive library of how-to videos, manuals, spec sheets, forums, and even tech support phone numbers.

Youtube – Tons of videos.  Try searching “how to operate an midas sound console”.

USITT – United States Institute of Theatre Technology is who I consider the leader in tech education.  They have chapters all around the country and are extremely accessible.  If you’re a member (wicked inexpensive), you get their quarterly periodical, discounts on resource purchases, and bragging rights.

Conferences – Conferences are a great place to mingle with your tribe and ask questions of people who are doing what you want to do.  LDI is one of the big lighting conferences out there that happens every year.  Go to Vegas for a few days and network.  Don’t know how to network, check out this article I wrote on how to network at a trade show.
